Acupuncture - Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used forms of medicine in the world. Originating in China more than 2,500 years ago, acupuncture is currently one of the most thoroughly researched, practiced, and respected forms of complementary medicine available anywhere.
According to Traditional East Asian Medicine, your overall health is determined by the quality of the Qi (energy) flow through the natural pathways of your body (meridians). Acupuncture uses a variety of techniques, including placing very thin sterile needles into specific points on the body, to stimulate and improve your Qi flow. The many benefits of acupuncture include:
Pain reduction
Stress and tension relief
Increased energy levels
Improved digestion
Relief from bad habits and addictions
Greater sense of overall health and well-being
Ear Seeds - Ear Seeds are pellets or actual seeds on small adhesive patches that are placed on acupoints on the external ear. By their application to the "point" and intermittent pressure by you upon them for up to four days they stimulate the action of the point. Patterns of points may be chosen to address specific concerns or a sensor device may locate points that are particularly active personalizing the treatment especially for you. Ear seeds extend the effective range of the treatment and is especially helpful in relieving pain, anxiety, and addiction. Ear seeds may be a stand alone treatment or included in an acupuncture session.
Herbal Medicine - Chinese herbal medicine is a 2,000 year old tradition using naturally occurring substances — including herbs — to enhance one's health and vitality. This approach supports the body's natural self-healing mechanisms and abilities. Rather than killing microbes we seek to strengthen your immune system. Rather than a directed intervention a formula is balanced to restore homeostasis - imagine you are standing on one foot and holding a coffee cup - I won't throw you a ball but help you put both feet on the ground and maybe even hold the cup for a moment.
Since each patient has different needs, I carefully select and combine a variety of herbs that will synergistically blend together to achieve optimal results for your unique situation. I prefer to use formulas that are balanced and have been in use for decades to hundreds of years with a record of effectiveness. I prescribe high-quality, professional-grade herbal medicines that are available only to qualified licensed professionals.
Chinese herbal medicine can be very effective and sometimes fills a gap in western pharmaceutical medicine but too often is cost prohibitive to my mind - so I will often prefer to utilize some other approach or technique. May be a stand alone treatment or included in an acupuncture session.
Cupping - Cupping has been a part of Chinese Medicine for over 2,500 years. It relieves aches and pains, improves circulation, and also helps with respiratory and digestive issues. I place a specialized "cup" on specific points on your body, and then use suction to draw your skin up into the cups. This draws stagnant blood to the surface so it can be dispersed and reabsorbed, which facilitates the flow of your Qi (circulation). This relieves pain, restores motion, releases the surface to fight off a cold, and moves blood to benefit body functions. May be a stand alone treatment or included in an acupuncture session.
Electroacupuncture/Estim - an effective holistic treatment for pain, nausea, and chronic ailments. In practice, it is actually very similar to traditional acupuncture. Using the exact same system of Traditional East Asian Medicine, I attach a device to the needles that delivers gentle electrical pulses between two points. This helps restore the healthy flow of Qi (energy) through your body, removing any blockages and clearing out stagnant areas. By changing the frequency of the pulsations I change the directions to the nervous system that responds with production of neurotransmitters that stimulate pain relief or tissue repair or optimize function. Estim replaces manipulation of the needles by hand to strengthen a treatment. This is seldom necessary. Some people like it, some don't. I will usually do several treatments before using estim.
Gua Sha - Although Gua Sha is an ancient healing technique used by Chinese Medicine practitioners for thousands of years, it is relatively unknown in the West. It is recognized throughout Asia as a highly effective treatment for chronic illness, stress, fatigue, pain and a host of other ailments.
A lubricating lotion or oil is applied to a region or channel then a smooth round-edged tool is used to stroke that area. This creates red patches of skin (called "Sha"), detoxifying your blood and restoring the healthy flow if Qi (energy) to the area. The Sha will fade in 2 to 3 days and as it does the body generates several extremely beneficial substances that science strives to replicate. Often the sense of relief and vitality that is produced is long lasting. May be a stand alone treatment or included in an acupuncture session.
Moxibustion - Moxibustion is a Traditional East Asian Medicine technique that involves the burning of mugwort, artemesia argyii, over a location on the body to relieve pain, speed healing and improve circulation. It works in a multitude of ways, the heat, radiation, scent, chemical components and products of combustion, all combine to benefit the effect. Moxibustion has been used for healing purposes throughout Asia for thousands of years.
Among other benefits, a landmark study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1998 found that 75.4% of women suffering from breech presentations before childbirth had fetuses that rotated to the normal position after receiving moxibustion at an acupuncture point on the bladder meridian. May be a stand alone treatment or included in an acupuncture session.
Tui Na - Tui Na is an ancient form of bodywork that is based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. A variety of techniques are used addressing channels (energy pathways) and points to open and harmonize the flow of life force throughout your body. Fingertips, knuckles, palms, forearms and elbows are used to mobilize circulation in muscles and stretch connective tissue facilitating flow of Qi. This is most often included at the beginning of a treatment as a tool to assess health and vigor or at the end of a treatment to round out a session.
Acupressure - I utilize patterns of acupoints to connect the flow through pathways on the body to address specific concerns or to release stress and improve health and speed healing. In an acupressure session, I apply a light touch directly to locations on your body, with fingertip or palm to open blocked pathways and restore well being. The proximity and time required to achieve connection is avoidable through the use of other techniques so this is seldom used. I may teach a brief pattern for specific complaints that you can then use on your own at home.
Medical Qi Gong instruction - Medical Qi Gong is an ancient Chinese Medical practice that combines slow movements, conscious breathing, and focused mental attention to strengthen and enhance the flow of Qi (energy) throughout your body. I will often prescribe and instruct you in a simple short activity that will enhance your treatment and extend the benefit between and beyond appointments.
Meditation instruction - Meditation is a term that may describe inumerable practices usually of focused attention. I will often instruct a patient to utilize a certain form of meditation to extend the treatment or alleviate a condition. Often a meditation will be suggested during a treatment to enhance the effect.
Fa Qi - Similar to Reiki, Fa Qi is used to facilitate and harmonize the flow of Qi or microcirculation throughout the body. It involves the movement of quantum particles by the focused attention of the practitioners bodymind through the portion of the tapestry of life that you are being. This brings great benefit if you choose to receive it. I usually include Fa Qi during a session and it can also be a stand alone treatment.
